In this course Kelly Thoma will teach a collection of compositions for lyra and will describe very analytically how these pieces are interpreted on a lyra with sympathetic strings in terms of style, technique, ornamentation, variations and approach. The repertoire that will be taught will mostly focus on contemporary compositions written especially for this instrument through the past 25 years with influences from Cretan, Turkish, Azeri, Bulgarian and Indian music, as well as some older and traditional compositions that reveal the possibilities and the colors of this instrument. The level of difficulty will be quite high so students should expect to be challenged to learn approximately 1-2 pieces in every 3 hours set.
Musicians with other bowed instruments are welcome as long as they have an advanced level on their instrument and are happy to learn by heart.
Scores will be used selectively for some of the compositions.
(A course for basic level will be offered Sept. 25-30)
